Public Cabins In Katmai, Alaska

Brown bears, sport fishing and volcanoes draw visitors to Katmai National Park and Preserve in Alaska. The park spans nearly 5 million acres of country, including the Valley of 10,000 Smokes, site of a powerful 1912 volcanic eruption. Its remote and vast location means that you can reach much of the park only by boat or floatplane. Accommodations are understandably scarce, but public cabins are available if you reserve early.

Named after Roy Fure, a Lithuanian immigrant who came to Alaska in the early 1900s, Fure's cabin is a one-room house built on the shores of Naknek Lake's Bay of Islands. Once Fure's home and built in 1926, the cabin is now maintained for public use. The Katmai National Park and Preserve describes it as "made of hand-hewn spruce logs with dovetail notching reminiscent of European craftsmanship." The National Register of Historic Places listed the cabin in 1976, and the National Park Service restored it in the late 1980s. Fure's cabin can be reserved through the Katmai National Park headquarters.
