How to Make a Xylophone out of Glass & Water

    • 1). Line up eight identical glasses next to each other. Space them close together but ensure that they are not touching.

    • 2). Fill each glass with a differing level of water. You should have the water levels decreasing gradually from left to right so that the glass on the far right, with the least amount of water, makes the highest pitched sound and the glass on the far left, with the most water, the lowest.

    • 3). Tap each glass with a spoon to hear the tone the water level produces. Tap on different sections of the glass to see if that makes a difference to the tone.

    • 4). Adjust the water level in each glass until the glass produces the tone that you desire. You can then use the xylophone to play small tunes. Try to create the same notes that you hear on the musical scale and adjust the water levels in the glasses accordingly.
