Robin - An informal group from work have starting camping together every couple of months or so, and we take turns picking or recommending a place to spend the weekend. In this case one of the group selected this campground as it allows pets. I RV camped there in December 2003.

Campground Review

Silver River State Park is located next to Silver River whose point of origin is Silver Springs, which is a very popular and well-known tourist attraction in central Florida.

The campground is relatively new and well thought out. The sites are level and very spacious with an abundance of oak and pine trees. Each site has a picnic table, fire ring, 30-amp electric, and water.

Volunteers at the park chop firewood, and for a voluntary donation (honor system) campers are free to take what they need for their stay at the park. The bath houses are immaculate and include both restrooms and shower rooms (with area heaters to take off the chill in the winter), a coin operated washer and dryer, a pay phone (though cellular phone use is not a problem), as well as a clean-up sink for those needing a place to wash their dishes. The staff is friendly and very visible with regard to availability for assistance, checking vacated campsites for campfires that need to be cleaned of ashes, and ensuring the facilities are clean.

There is a large, well-equipped playground for children, walking and biking trails, access to the river for canoeing and kayaking, and an added bonus of a lovely museum featuring archeological finds from Silver Springs and the surrounding area, as well as historical artifacts dating from the earliest settlers in the area.

Admission to the museum is $2.00/person and well worth it. The museum is open to visitors on Saturday and Sunday, and the facility is used for classes for school field trips throughout the year. Additional recreation opportunities include nature/bird walks sponsored by the park staff/volunteers, and Silver Springs with its adjacent water park just a mile down the road from the state park's entrance. There is convenient shopping nearby too. A dump station for RVs is set up for two RVs to use and very accessible. For those who want to experience the park, but don't tent or RV camp, there are a number of cabins available to rent with fireplaces and screened porches. This park is a definite jewel.
