How to Open a Savings Bank Account With SBI

    • 1). Go to the bank's website and use the branch locator to find a branch near you. On the top left, click the downward arrow in the "Locators" pull-down menu. Select "branch." On the branch locator page, select your desired search criteria from the pull-down menu and enter any corresponding text in the second box. Click "search" and all branches matching your criteria will be displayed.

    • 2). Download, print and complete the Account Opening Application Form. Go to the SBI website homepage, click on "Forms" at the bottom left. On the next page, select "(Forms) Personal Banking." The form has two parts. If you are a new customer, you will need to download, print and complete both forms. Also, if opening a joint account, both parties are required to fill out Part One. For existing customers, only the second part is necessary. If you do not have access to a printer, it is possible to fill these out in person at the branch.

    • 3). Bring the following to the branch of your choice: your completed Account Opening Application Form, photocopies of the required supporting documents, two passport-size photographs of the potential account holder, and an opening deposit.

The required supporting documents include a PAN card (Income Tax Permanent Account Number Card) and a passport. Alternatively, you may use an acceptable proof of identity, such as a voter ID card or driver's license, and a proof of address, such as a telephone bill or ration card. For a complete list of acceptable documents, refer to the SBI website.

    • 4). Choose between the Savings Account or Savings Account Plus. The Savings Account features a free ATM card, free internet banking, an interest rate of 3.5% and the ability to transfer accounts between branches free of charge. In addition to these benefits, the Savings Account Plus allows you to place some of your funds in a term deposit which will earn a higher yield.
