How to Dispute a Late Credit Letter

    Work Directly with the Creditor

    • 1). Gather any evidence regarding the payment, along with your account number.

    • 2). Call the creditor and politely explain that they have made a mistake involving the date of your payment. Give them the correct date of your payment and ask that they change your payment to "on time" status.

    • 3). Record the time and date of your call, the agent with whom you spoke and the outcome of the call.

    • 4). Wait at least 30 days and then check your credit report to ensure that the negative item was removed.

    Work with the Credit Bureau

    • 1). Draft a dispute letter, informing the credit bureau of the erroneous item. In the header, include the date, your name, address and account number. Explain the error, and state the due date and correct date of your payment.

    • 2). Enclose any supporting documentation such as copies of your statement or bill and a copy of the check or other proof of payment. Note any enclosures in the footer of your dispute letter.

    • 3). Make a copy of the letter and supporting documentation for your records.

    • 4). Mail the letter via certified mail, and request a return receipt. Once received, file with the rest of the documentation.

    • 5). Wait at least 30 days for a response.

    • 6). If your request is denied, you may try again or seek the advice of an attorney.
