How to Stucco Over a Brick Fireplace
- 1). Clean your brick fireplace and ensure that it is free of dust.
- 2). Dampen the brick surface of your fireplace by dipping a washcloth into a bowl of water and wiping down the brick.
- 3). Mix one part Portland cement and one part masonry cement with eight parts damp sand in a large bucket to form the stucco mix. Add water and stir the mix until it takes on the consistency of very thick paste.
- 4). Apply the stucco to the face of your brick fireplace with a trowel. The stucco should be approximately 1/8- to 1/4-inch thick.
- 5). Allow the stucco to partially solidify. Use a plasterer's rake to scratch through the stucco. When you finish this part of the process, your fireplace should have a base coat of stucco with either a vertical or horizontal pattern of lines.
- 6). Allow 36 to 48 hours for the base coat to cure. Wipe your fireplace down with a damp washcloth periodically during this time to keep the base coat damp. This helps the stucco bond more firmly.
- 7). Apply the finish coat of stucco. Do this in the same manner that you applied your base coat. Your finish coat should be of approximately the same thickness as the base coat. After the finish coat is applied, you may texture the stucco as you wish.
