NFL Week 8 and #58; A Review of Pittsburgh and New Orleans and Mini Review of the Rest

New Orleans beating Pittsburgh was their best win since winning last years' Super Bowl. It wasn't just beating a good team from the AFC. They beat the Steelers at the own game. The Saints hit the Steelers in the mouth over and over again. They also only had one turnover which had been their Achilles heel in their most recent loses. Drew Brees played his most efficient game of the season. He completed short to medium range passes which controlled the clock and kept their defense off the field. He even took advantage of Troy Polamalu's over aggressiveness and completed a long pass 50 yard pass setting up their first touchdown in the in fourth quarter. The Saints defense was outstanding constantly pressuring and sacking Ben Roethlisberger, controlling the running game and stopping the Steelers to a field goal when the Steelers had first and goal from the one yard line was a momentum changer. This win could be a blue print for the Saints to play their remaining games because they are going to face tough teams like Atlanta and Tampa Bay in their division. Although that goes against their nature of attacking downfield and scoring points in bunches.

Pittsburgh on the other hand played well enough to win, but didn't. They seem to be caught off guard by how physical the Saints were. Their running game was stifled apart from the long touchdown run by Rashard Mendanhall. Their offensive line allowed Roethlisberger to hit more than he is accustomed to. Also Roethlisberger was not allowed to get the ball downfield to their big play receiver Mike Wallace. As bad as the Steelers played, they were still in the game and had not Heath Miller fumbled midway through the fourth quarter the results might have been different. Playing New Orleans in the raucous atmosphere can be difficult and no loss is ever a good loss. This loss was. It was a non conference loss. The Steelers are still a top tier team and come playoff time they will be the team other teams want to avoid playing.

New England beating Minnesota. They Patriots came up big when they had too. They stopped the Vikings on downs in the second quarter when the Vikings had first and goal was huge. Brady's long pass to Brandon Tate to start the third quarter was also key. Vikings played well at times, but not being more creative on goal line second quarter cost them big time. A bootleg by even a gimpy Farve would have caught Patriots off guard. Farve played well and under control before he got whacked in the face. It was scary seeing him carted off the field with his eyes closed. I thought it was more serious. Farve has a extremely high pain threshold. The Randy Moss press conference was weird. Moss(who has since been released) wishes he was still a Patriot, does not fare well for the Vikings whose season is now on the brink.

Miami beating Cincinnati. The Dolphins win despite scoring only one touchdown. There kicker Dan Carpenter is now planning on signing on with Manchester United as soon as the season is over with. Bengals lose again but T.O scored two touchdowns and still is in love with himself.

San Francisco over Denver. It's very nice of Roger Goodell to give London an NFL game every year. It's too bad he gives them crumpet crumb teams every year.

Jacksonville destroys Dallas. The Jaguars with a balanced offensive and opportunistic defense easily beats the Cowboys in Jerry Jones 90 foot television stadium. The Cowboys have earned the right to be on the six inch black and white television by the bathroom in all sports bars.

Kansas City beats Buffalo on a last second win in overtime. The Chiefs win a game they clearly deserved to tie. Buffalo is the best winless team in NFL history, but they've covered the spread in 5 of their 7 losses.

Detroit comes back against Washington. The Lions are getting better and better every week. They have shot to win finish second in the NFC north. The Redskins pulling McNabb in the last two minutes was a good idea. Rex Grossman is the second coming of Joe Montana in the two minute offense according to his Pee Wee Coach.

Green Bay shutting out the New York Jets. That was a terrific effort by the Packer defense keeping the Jets scoreless. The Jets coming off a bye, must have spent their time with the cast of "Jersey Shore."

St. Louis over Carolina. The Rams are play fast on offense and defense. They have a legitimate chance to win their division. The Panthers on the other hand are looking forward to free agency and the draft.

San Diego holding off Tennessee. The Charger won this game without their top receivers, a gimpy Antonio Gates and of course the weekly blocked punt. The Chargers are like cats, they have nine lives. Titans lost a game they were in control of but they enjoyed their visit to the San Diego zoo.

Tampa Bay edging Arizona. Buccaneer quarterback Josh Freeman is developing a reputation of being clutch with another fourth quarter comeback win. The Cardinals are hoping Kurt Warner comes back after his stint on Dancing with the Stars.

Oakland crushing Seattle. The Raiders showed that last week's blowout win was not a fluke with another outstanding performance. Owner Al Davis has starting making Super Bowl traveling plans. The Seahawks play with speed and heart at home. On the road they play like passive zombies.
