How to Create Lines in Acrylic Paintings

    • 1). Choose a paintbrush that is approximately as large as the line you wish to create.

    • 2). Dip the paintbrush into the jar of water, then dip the paintbrush onto the palette and swish it into the color you plan to use to paint the line.

    • 3). Apply the paintbrush to the test canvas. Practice painting a line on the test canvas. Do this by dragging the paintbrush across the surface of the canvas, applying even pressure as you go. Watch for drips as you paint--if it drips, it is too runny. In this case, mix more paint into the water-paint mixture on your palette. If the paint clogs up on the test canvas, try adding more water to the paint. If the line is too thick, try lightening your pressure, or switch to a smaller paintbrush. If the line is too thin, apply more pressure, or switch to a thicker paintbrush. Practice painting multiple lines on the test canvas, until you're capable of making the line as even and straight as you wish it to be. If you're satisfied with your line on the test canvas, move to the next step.

    • 4). Dip the paintbrush into the paint again.

    • 5). Apply the paintbrush to your working canvas and paint a line as you painted a line on the test canvas.
