Want To Speak Spanish?

If you really want to speak Spanish, the only effective method is to have face-to-face lessons and conversations. Any suggestion that you can simply plug a cd or DVD into your stereo and subsequently learn to speak Spanish is disingenuous and untrue, and trying to learn like that will only lead you to frustration.

As social people, we learn Spanish (or any new language) easiest when we can be close to our instructor and clearly see and hear the sounds and words being formed through her/his mouth. And, when we speak, we need immediate feedback and to have all of our questions answered on the spot.

Whether in one-on-one or group lessons, you must begin your quest to speak Spanish with some human assistance. The frustration that follows from not having a live instructor has led many would-be bilinguals to shelve their language-teaching software and even to abandon the idea of learning to speak Spanish at all. That is a shame.

Of course, if you can move to Mexico or another Spanish-speaking country you will certainly accelerate the learning process. That way you can exponentially multiply the number of instructors helping you every day. But most of us do not have the luxury of spending months or years in another country, so we are forced to take Spanish lessons closer to home.

To ensure you absorb, practice and retain your Spanish, the lessons must be relevant to your daily life. Otherwise, you will learn about picture frame, horse, and picnic table but then have little to no opportunities to practice. The best language schools and instructors will plan your lessons and materials around your workplace, your family and your interests. In this fashion, you will encounter many daily situations where you can use your newly-acquired Spanish skills.

For example, as part of your lessons and homework you should be required to identify, write down, translate and study many of the words and phrases you want to be able to say in Spanish. Your instructor will then help you memorize those terms while also building your familiarity with the structure of Spanish and your general vocabulary.

Another way to ensure success with speaking real-life Spanish is to include activities, situations and games to help reinforce your lessons. You instructor should occasionally meet you/take you to the local Latin supermarket for a fun, informative lesson. There you will see many fruits, vegetable, meats and other products that you may not see in your usual supermarket, along with many shoppers who speak Spanish. The shoppers are always happy to see and help practice with someone who is learning Spanish.

So, to take advantage of these guidelines, find a great language school with experienced Spanish instructors and you are guaranteed to be speaking Spanish in no time!
