How to Work at a Fast Food Restaurant
- 1). Groom yourself well before work every day. Remove facial jewelry, shower and wash your hair. Men should shave to meet facial hair requirements every day they work. Wear a clean, wrinkle-free uniform and brush your teeth -- bad breath is the last thing you would want to get from a food service worker.
- 2). Wear comfortable, soft-soled shoes. You will be on your feet all day, and your feet and back will thank you for wearing proper footwear. Most restaurants with a footwear policy require black shoes. Cross-trainers or specially designed shoes for food service are appropriate choices.
- 3). Perform your job duties with a zen-like focus and intensity, no matter how simple or menial they seem. The more pride and attention you give your work, the more you will stand out. The more you stand out, the more opportunities for training, education and promotion you'll receive.
- 4). Smile a lot. Greeting customers and co-workers with a smile helps everybody feel more at ease, more welcome and more at home. Better still, a smile can help you stay happy at work. According to neuro-linguistic programming guru Tony Robbins, your body is conditioned to smile when you're happy -- which means it's also conditioned to be happy when you smile.
- 5). Communicate with your managers, both in terms of how to improve your job performance and how you can move up in the company. Fast food management is a high turnover profession, and quality managers are on the lookout to spot the next up-and-comer.
