Chinese Quad-What To Do After the Delivery Truck Leaves Your Chinese Quad
The freight delivery truck's tail lights are fading fast down the street. You are standing there looking at this large crate with your new chinese quad inside. Now it is time to start earning that great price you paid on the web. What you do in the next few hours or days will pay back huge dividends in riding time, frustration, and your chinese quad experience.
After you open the crate, find the manual for the chinese quad and spend some time studying and understanding everything. Once you have mastered the instructions and understand what to do, it is time to proceed.
At a bare minimum, you will have to install the wheels, handlebars, battery, and shock absorber.
After this is done, you could probably fill the tank, fire it up, and ride off, guaranteeing a dismal and frustrating chinese quad riding adventure.
Here is an action list of things that need to be done to be sure your quad will be a good one.
1. Change all the fluids in the Chinese quad.
The oil in the engine is designed for corrosion protection and is not useful for lubrication. Change the engine oil a couple of times to flush out the original oil.
Change the oil in the differential if it has one.
Change the oil in the reverse gear box.
Drain and replace the coolant with a 50/50 mix if your chinese quad is water cooled.
Remove the brake fluid and replace with a good DOT fluid
2. Adjust the Brakes and Clutch.
If the brakes are set too tight, the brake lining will heat up, slow the quad, and wear out too soon
Adjust the clutch for a solid release point about half way in the travel.
3. Adjust and align the chain. Set the chain for the correct amount of play.
4. Go over the chinese quad completely, removing and putting loctite on all the fasteners in the body, frame and other components. Use caution not to force the fasteners as they may snap under too much pressure. Check for cross threaded fasteners. You may have to clean up some threads with a hand tap and replace some bolts.
5. Check the battery box for tight mounting before installing the battery. If possible, replace the battery with a good quality battery. A weak battery will cause starting problems that are hard to spot.
6. Check and reseat all the electrical connectors that you can reach. Make sure the ground connection to the frame is clean and tight. Tie up any wires that seem loose or may come in contact with hot surfaces.
7. Check fuel tank for packing debris or other stuff that may have found it's way into the tank.
8. Install a fuel filter between the tank and carb.
9. After filling with gas, start the engine and let it idle for about 30 minutes. This will dissolve the gel pack that is under the float in the carburetor.
10. After warming up and checking for leaks, a few test rides may reveal a carb adjustment is necessary. Instruction for adjusting your carb may be found on the internet.
These ten simple steps may not completely guarantee a trouble free ride, but they will go a long way toward insuring that you or your kids return home safe and sound.
