What Are Mod Chips?
- Mod chips are small, electronic devices that are used to disable security features and restrictions embedded in gaming consoles by the manufacturer.
- Mod chips are used primarily to pirate games, which includes downloading games that are not licensed to certain consoles. For example, a PlayStation that has been modified would be able to pirate games licensed for use on an Xbox, which is not the intention of either manufacturer. In addition, in some instances, expert game console users will insert mod chips to enhance their gaming experience.
- Although Mod chips are not illegal in the United States, using pirated software is illegal. The chips are illegal in the United Kingdom, as is pirated software. Check with the manufacturer of the console and local law enforcement to avoid breaking any laws with the use of a modification chip.
- Modification chips should be used with caution. Installing a mod chip in your console may result in a voided warranty, or it could negate the manufacturer's ability to service the console.
