How to Troubleshoot a Memory Card Reader
- 1). Plug in the USB cable of your memory card reader into the USB port of your computer.
- 2). Click the "Start" button and select "My Computer." Look for the memory card reader drive. If you do not see it listed in the My Computer window, unplug the card reader cable and other USB storage devices connected to your computer. Then plug the memory card reader back again.
- 3). Wait for the Auto Play window to open. If it opens and you see the memory card window, the problem is fixed. If not, continue with the next step.
- 4). Restart your computer.
- 5). Click the "Start" button and type "Device Manager" on the Search bar right above the Start button. Press enter and wait for the Device Manager window to open.
- 6). Look for Disk Drives from the list and click the plus (+) sign next to it.
- 7). Right-click the "Card Reader" option and choose the "Uninstall" option. Allow the list of devices to update and remove the card reader device. Restart your computer after the card reader is removed from the list.
- 8). Plug in the card reader once again and see if it works. If not, proceed to the next step.
- 9). Try a different reader that you know works and see if it works in the computer. If it does, the problem is with the reader and you should contact the store or manufacturer and find out what to do.
