"The Last Samurai"" Costumes Go on Exhibit
A stunning array of period costumes from Warner Bros. Pictures' upcoming epic action drama "The Last Samurai" will be on display in the windows of Barneys New York in New York, Chicago, Los Angeles and Seattle, from October 29 through November 9.
Designed by Oscar-nominee Ngila Dickson exclusively for "The Last Samurai" and personally selected for exhibit by Simon Doonan, Creative Director for Barneys New York, the costumes represent a range of dress from the 1870s: full traditional Samurai battle armor, Japanese Imperial Court garments as well as everyday kimonos for women and children, plus American Union Army battle uniforms and western garb.
Complementing the wardrobe selections are replica items hand-crafted for the film, including helmets, spears, battle flags and Samurai swords.
Says Doonan of the window art, "This movie is a visual extravaganza with the most mind-blowingly beautiful costumes I've ever seen. It's perfect traffic-stopping eye candy."
Each of the four Barneys New York locations will feature different pieces from the collection. The flagship New York store will offer a quartet of intricately hand-hewn Samurai battle armor designed in the traditional fashion for high-ranking officers, including one worn by the film's star Tom Cruise, as well as armor for common soldiers and uniforms representing both old and modern styles of the Imperial Army. A collection of regal kimonos for the Emperor and Imperial Court will be presented along with more modest garments as would be worn by villagers.
Cruise's Samurai battle gear can also be seen in the Barneys New York Los Angeles store window, accompanied by a second imposing suit of antiqued armor and a traditional Samurai wife's elegantly understated kimono.
The Barneys in Chicago features an authentic and weathered American Union Army uniform worn by Cruise and a contrasting Samurai set of armor, plus a variety of Japanese clothing, circa 1870, for both men and women.
The Barneys in Seattle will present a long, battle-worn leather overcoat designed specifically to brave the journey Cruise's character takes from the Civil War and Indian campaigns through to Japan, as well as a full set of Samurai armor and kimonos typical of the Imperial Court.
Following the 12-day public exhibit, a portion of the collection will embark on a tour of international venues while a number of costumes will remain in New York for the film's December 2nd East Coast premiere and celebration, hosted by Barneys New York at the Madison Avenue Store.
"The Last Samurai" opens nationwide on Friday, December 5.
