How to Find Out a Burnt Resistor Resistance

    • 1). Attach one lead to the positive terminal and one lead to the negative terminal of a multimeter.

    • 2). Connect the remaining ends of the positive and negative leads of the multimeter to the two leads of a burnt resistor. Polarity is not an issue; therefore, it does not matter which resistor lead is connected to which multimeter lead.

    • 3). Find the ohmic measurement values on the multimeter and turn the selector knob to the highest ohmic setting.

    • 4). Read the value on the multimeter screen. If the value is zero or fluctuates around zero, turn the selector knob to the next lowest setting. Repeat the process until a whole number value is read. If the value remains at zero, regardless of the ohmic setting, then the resistor is no longer functional as a current limiting device and should be disposed.
