Easy Toddler Costume Ideas

    People

    • Dress your toddler in a costume that mimics their favorite person's profession or everyday look. Turn your toddler into a ballerina by dressing her in a leotard and matching stockings and ballet shoes. Create a tutu by tying strips of tulle to an elastic headband that fits her waist.

Recreate a policeman's uniform by dressing your toddler in dark navy blue pants, a button-down dress shirt, black belt and black shoes or boots. Complete the look with a policeman's hat, fake badge and whistle. Depending on your toddler's age you can also hook a pair of plastic handcuffs to his belt.

For a farmer's costume, dress your toddler in a pair of overalls, a plaid shirt and work boots. Complete the look with a straw hat and bandanna. Take him trick-or-treating in a red wagon.

    Animals

    • A variety of animal costumes can be created using your toddler's everyday clothing. For a dog costume, dress your toddler in a white sweat suit or footed pajamas and put white socks or gloves on his hands. Attach pieces of black fur or felt to the clothing to create spots. Create the dog's ears out of felt and attach them to a headband. A long sock or piece of felt can be used for the dog's tail.

For a tiger costume, dress your toddler in a black sweat suit or footed pajamas. Tape pieces of orange duct tape to the clothing to represent the stripes. Cut ear shapes from orange craft foam and tape them to a black headband to create the tiger's ears. Use a long piece of felt or tape for the tail.

    Food

    • Make your toddler a costume that is almost delicious enough to eat. Dress your child in red tights, an oversize red sweatshirt and red knit hat for a tomato costume. Attach pieces of green felt to the hat and collar of the sweatshirt to represent the tomato's leaves.

To turn your toddler into a sandwich, cut the shape of a slice of bread from two pieces of thick foam cushion inserts. Glue tan strips of felt around the edges of the foam to represent the crust of the bread. Glue a large red felt circle to one slice of bread and strips of green felt to the other to represent the lettuce and tomato. Glue wide ribbon to the bread to create the shoulder straps.

    Nature

    • Use parts of nature as inspiration for your toddler's costume. For a sun costume, dress your child in yellow tights and an oversize yellow sweatshirt. Make the sun's face and rays out of golden yellow felt and glue it to the sweatshirt. Use orange felt piece to create the sun's smile.

To create a cloud costume, dress your toddler in an oversize light blue sweatshirt. Cut two cloud shapes from white felt and glue them to the front and back of the sweatshirt. Glue a plane or helicopter cutout to the cloud on the front of the sweatshirt.
