DIY: Painting Furniture

    • 1). Cover your floor with a drop cloth to protect it from paint splatters and spillages.

    • 2). Sand the surface of your piece if it is smooth and glossy, such as varnished wood, to adhere to the paint. A dry, chalky surface does not need to be sanded.

    • 3). Apply an even coat of oil-based primer to your surface. Leave it to dry.

Apply two thin, even coats of latex paint with a fresh roller or paintbrush. Painting with a semi-gloss finish gives you a durable, easy-to-clean surface. Do not overload your roller or brush, and take your time. Paint with even, light strokes to avoid noticeable roller or brush marks.

Wait until your first coat is completely dry before applying your second coat. Leave it to dry.

    • 6). Apply two thin, even coats of water-based polycrylic for a protective finish, working from one side of your surface to the other. Wait until your first coat is completely dry before applying your second coat.

    • 7). Wait 48 hours before using or placing items on your piece. If you can wait for five days, this will ensure a completely dry surface.
