- Electrical cable designated UF (underground feeder) is suitable for direct burial underground, including in wet locations. It may also be used instead of wire in conduit or instead of NM (non metallic) cable in the interior of a building.
- MC (metal clad) wiring is manufactured in versions made from interlocked metal tape and smooth or corrugated metal tube. It may be suitable for direct burial underground; however, if used this way it should be marked as such.
- NUCC (nonmetallic underground conduit with conductors) is a wiring method limited to direct burial installations by the National Electric Code. It has been used by utility companies, hotels and airports since the 1960s.
