How to Install a Sirius Radio in GM Cars With XM
- 1). Acquire the SIR-GM1 Satellite Tuner. This is sold by Sirius and is specifically made to convert the XM Radio radio unit in GM vehicles to a Sirius subscription. Without it, there is no way to use your in-dash satellite radio feature with Sirius Satellite Radio. Check with a local sound shop, or purchase the tuner directly from Sirius.
- 2). Disconnect your negative battery cable before proceeding. Mount the tuner as specified in the package directions. The mounting hardware is included with the package. The tuner should be mounted in place of the XM tuner. The XM tuner in most GM vehicles is mounted in the passenger side of the dash, above the glove box. Remove your glove box to remove the XM tuner, and then mount the Sirius tuner in its place.
- 3). Trace the XM Radio antenna to determine its mounting location. Use the XM Radio antenna path to install your Sirius antenna. Insert the wiring through the same path (usually through the dash and rubber moldings). The exact location of the antenna will depend on which GM vehicle you have. Once the wiring is run, mount the antenna by following the package instructions and connect the cable to the rear of the tuner.
- 4). Remove your radio head-unit to attach the tuner. Most GM vehicles require removal of several small panels surrounding the radio. Once you have the radio out of the dash, run the wiring harness from the tuner through the dash and into the rear of the radio cavity. This method follows the factory XM cable and will prevent you from having visible wires or cables.
- 5). Connect the wiring harness to the rear of the radio to the same connection the XM tuner was connected. Replace the factory radio and any panels you had to remove to access the radio.
- 6). Replace the glove box any other panel you had to remove to access the original XM tuner. Reconnect your negative battery cable. Your new Sirius Satellite Radio should now work with your existing radio controls.
