How to Hook Up Television, Cable, DVD & Stereo Systems

    TV

    • 1). Plug the TV in to an AC power outlet. Check that the outlet and the TV work by turning on the TV. Check all devices right away to avoid any unnecessary confusion in the future.

    • 2). Locate the TV inputs. These are the colored holes where you will plug in your different devices. Depending on the brand, the inputs will be on the front, side or back of the TV. If you are using an older TV, there may only be one set of inputs, meaning that you will have to unplug each device any time you want to hook up something new. Newer televisions feature rows of different inputs that allow the TV to simultaneously access multiple devices.

    • 3). Turn the TV off while you hook up the other devices.

    Cable

    • 1). Plug the cable box into AC power. Choose a plug on the power strip that is next to the TV plug to avoid tangled cords as much as possible.

Hook one end of the cable connector (pictured) to the appropriate plug on the cable box, and the other end to the matching TV input often labeled "cable." Secure the connector tightly to both devices.

    • 3). Leave the vent of the cable box unobscured to prevent damage. Vents are usually located on top of the box.

    DVD

    • 1). Plug the DVD player into AC power. Once again, find an outlet on the power strip that limits the potential for tangled wires as much as possible.

Plug in the RCA component cable (pictured) to the back of the DVD player, matching up each of the three colors to its appropriate output. Yellow is the video cord, and red and white are the sound cords.

    • 3). Decide which TV input to use for your DVD player and plug the other end of the RCA cable into the appropriate inputs. Some TV's may have inputs labeled "DVD," but most are labeled "Input 1," Input 2," etc. Remember which input you selected.

    • 4). Locate the input that you chose on your TV and turn on the DVD player to make sure that it is functioning correctly.

    Stereo System

    • 1). Plug in the stereo system to AC power.

    • 2). Run a component cable to the stereo receiver from each device that you wish to use with the stereo. Remember to match up the colors and keep in mind which input you applied to each device.

You can buy many different lengths of speaker wire.speaker wire image by Paolo from Fotolia.com

Position your speakers and run speaker wire (pictured) from the back of each speaker to the receiver. Cut the ends of the speaker wire with wire cutters and secure them tightly in the speakers.

    • 4). Connect the wire from the left speaker to the left input on the receiver and the wire from the right speaker to the right input.

    • 5). Test all connections by playing sound through each of your devices. Listen closely to each speaker to make sure that the sound is coming through clearly. If the speakers are not working correctly, check that all connections and inputs are attached tightly to the correct inputs.
