How to Become a Copywriter in Paris

UK copywriters have had a rough ride of late. It's been tough trying to keep the work and the cash flowing, ever since we saw those queues outside the Northern Rock back in 2007.

Once, Plan A was fine to consistently win new work. All you had to do was keep feeding the meter on Google Adwords and the work would continue to pour in. These days, though, those ads remain unclicked, unless it's by sharks and charlatans looking for nasty SEO pages at $2 a throw.

Time for Plan B? I should say so. It goes like this. It's very rare that you have to meet your clients these days. If you're a freelance copywriter, you can team up with customers all over the world using email and the telephone.

Businesses in, say, Paris, will be pleased to speak to you because they want the best copywriter for the job, not just one who's based in France.

The time is ripe for copywriters to snatch copywriting work from under the noses of rivals. A couple of good methods come to mind. The first one will mean shelling out a few pennies; the second is more or less free.

With the first one, you'll want to change your Google Adwords account to allow geographical clicks for 'copywriter Paris'.

If you want to do the same effect for free - and why wouldn't you? - you should put together a landing page talking about copywriting and copywriters in Paris or France. Tell Paris businesses about how they can save money by working remotely with their copywriter.

You can also mention that your fees might be lower because you're not paying a giant Parisian mortgage.

Of course, you must get your optimisation right. Put some longtail geographical keywords based on Paris or France in your H1 headline and H2 headings. Then consider keyword density. Something like 6% on a page of 400 words should be fine. That would mean that about 25 of your words should be keywords.

So, there's just one step left before you take your place as an honorary copywriter in Paris. You're going to need some useful backlinks. Sign up with some high-PR articles and press release sites and write some articles. Just ensure your anchor text relates to your copywriter Paris pages. Then you can watch your page make an assault on the North face of Google.

Here's an example of what I mean: this landing page is about Paris copywriters. The copywriter is based in Manchester. Why not try it yourself?
