What to Spray Around the Outside of a House to Get Rid of Ants?

    Insecticidal Sprays

    • Spraying an insecticidal solution around the perimeter of your home gets rid of the ants and their nests. Pyrethroid-based solutions such as Spectracide Triazicide, Bayer Advanced Lawn & Garden Multi-Insect Killer, Ortho Home Defense System or carbaryl (Sevin) work well to rid a house's perimeter of ants, according to the University of Kentucky College of Agriculture.

    Locating the Nests

    • The insecticidal spray works best if you can locate the ants' nests. Coating an index card or piece of cardboard with jelly, honey or corn syrup and placing it where you can see the ants is an effective way to discover the location of the nests. Once the ants feed, they will head back to the nests, thus leading you to the location.

    Granular Bait Product

    • Granular bait products are also effective in getting rid of the outdoor ants, according to the University of Kentucky. Sprinkle the substance along pavement cracks, near the ant mounds and other areas where ants are nesting or trailing.

    Preventing Indoor Invasions

    • Use caulking along crevices and cracks in your home exterior to prevent the ants from entering your home. Other areas that may require caulking are windows, door thresholds and openings where utility pipes and wires enter buildings. If ants are already inside your home, wipe them up with a damp paper towel. Wash along the pathway they used with a mild detergent-and-water solution. This erases the pheromone trail that attracts other ants to the path. Spray a residual insecticide around the entry point.
