How to Remove the Drill Chuck on the Makita 12V

    • 1). Remove the battery from your Makita 12V drill. Press the side tabs of the battery and pull it straight off the drill just as you would when changing the battery.

    • 2). Open the drill chuck to its fully open position with your hand. Turn the drill chuck collar until the jaws of the chuck open completely.

    • 3). Insert a Phillip head screwdriver into the chuck and turn the securing screw clockwise to remove it from the chuck. You might have to apply some downward pressure on the screw head while turning to initially loosen the screw. The screw is a reverse thread.

    • 4). Set the drill speed to low-gear and rotate the clutch collar to high. Insert the short end of the largest Allen wrench that fits into the drill chuck. Turn the chuck clockwise to tighten the chuck jaws around the Allen wrench as you would when installing a drill bit.

    • 5). Clamp the body of the drill in a bench vise without crushing the body. Alternatively, place the drill on its side on a work bench with the chuck hanging over the side of the bench.

    • 6). Tap the end of the Allen wrench sharply with a hammer. Use the Allen wrench as a handle to turn the chuck counterclockwise, and remove the chuck from the Makita drill.
