How Long After Grouting Should You Apply Sealer?

    Minimum Curing Time

    • The minimum curing time for any grout is 48 hours, although most manufacturers recommend that you wait at least 72 hours before applying any sealer to tile. This generally gives the thinset mortar as well as the grout adequate time to cure before you add the sealer. Once the sealer coat is applied, any moisture is locked in and has a hard time evaporating, and can lead to grout stains or mineral buildups that can mar the color of natural stone tiles.

    Temperature

    • The temperature can directly affect how soon after grouting you can apply sealer. If you live in a dry, hot area and are installing in the middle of summer, you can generally apply the sealer within 48 hours. In some cases you can actually apply the sealer within 24 hours (Arizona would be a good example of this). If the weather is cold it may take longer than 72 hours for the grout to be ready.

    Climate

    • Humidity can directly affect the curing rate of grout, as well as the thinset mortar used to install the tile. Humid areas, regardless if they are hot or cold, will require additional curing time for the grout. In these cases it is best to wait at least a minimum of four days before you apply any sealer. If you want to be on the safe side, wait at least a week before adding any sealer to the tile installation.

    Rapid Set Grouts

    • Rapid set grouts have a faster curing time that allows you to apply sealer sooner than with traditional grouts. While the type of grout you are using will vary the curing time, as a general rule you can apply the sealer within 12 hours for most rapid set grouts. Check the manufacturer instructions for your grout brand to verify when is best for that particular brand of grout.
