How to Disable a Security Alarm

    • 1). Locate the main security panel in the home. Some systems rely on one central panel that controls the whole system, while others use multiple panels throughout the home. Find the nearest one with a keypad that will enable you to disable it.

    • 2). Enter the security code into the panel. Each system has a numerical code that shuts off the system and disables an alarm. Punch in the code, and turn the system off to prevent another alarm activation.

    • 3). Call the security company. If an alarm goes off, a dispatcher will frequently call the home, but if he doesn't, notify the company that an alarm is going off. If you can't remember the security code, you'll likely be asked for a password on the account. Provide the password and your name, and the security company can disable the alarm remotely.

    • 4). Unplug the phone jack. For most alarm systems, the phone line is the system's only link to the dispatch center, so disconnecting the phone line can shut the system off.
