How to Replace the Clogged Fill Valve on a Toilet
- 1). Empty the toilet tank of all the water by shutting off the water supply to the toilet and then flushing the toilet to remove the bulk of the water. Use a sponge or rag to mop up the remaining water.
- 2). Disconnect the water supply hose from the underneath of the toilet where it screws into the flush valve. Use channel locks to loosen the nut of the water supply hose from the flush valve.
- 3). Unfasten the white plastic nut from the flush valve above where the water supply hose was attached. Lift the flush valve out of the toilet tank.
- 4). Adjust the new flush valve so that it is the same length as the old flush valve. This will ensure that the valve will shut the water off when it gets to the same level as with the old valve.
- 5). Cut the center out of the black gasket that came with the flush valve using a utility knife. Slide the gasket onto the end of the flush valve.
- 6). Install the flush valve through the hole in the bottom of the tank. Secure it by fastening the white plastic nut onto the end sticking through the bottom of the tank. Hand tighten until it is snug.
- 7). Screw the water supply hose onto the end of the flush valve and hand tighten. Attach one end of the rubber hose to the fitting at the top of the valve, and place the other end in the overflow tube. Turn on the water supply.
