Camping Essentials Over the Summer Break
Camping is one of the ultimate Kiwi pastimes.
There is nothing better than finding a site, setting up the tent and getting in touch with nature on the back roads of the country surrounded by native forest and bush.
It's certainly the way to get the most enjoyment and experience something a little different from any region in New Zealand.
Before you jump in the car and head off on your adventure, make sure you write a personal checklist of the things that you'll need to stay safe and enjoy yourself while camping this summer.
Essential Camping Equipment Sometimes even the basics are forgotten! Make sure you're prepared with some of these camping essentials.
Tent You might not be likely to forget it, but do you have the right one? Make sure your tent has enough room for the number likely to be using it plus an extra two to keep gear safe, check it for tears and make sure you have all the poles, stakes and ropes needed to set up.
If you're buying a new tent for your trip, ask about water resistance, zipper durability and how easy it is to pitch.
Larger tents require more people and, if you don't have the number needed camping with you - you'll be in for an unnecessarily rough time.
Ground Tarp Protect your tent with a heavy-duty plastic tarp - a ground tarp is essential to keeping the bottom of your tent dry and will even help prevent tears and other damage.
Tools and Repair Kits A hammer for your tent's stakes, knives, a scissor, tape, rope - take a few of the basics to help build your shelter or perform any repairs so that you don't have to pack up early if something does go wrong.
First Aid Kit Fill your first aid kit with bandages, anti-septic, bug repellent, antihistamines, burn dressings, tweezers and a scissor.
Along with the basics, don't forget any medications or inhalers that members of your group need.
Bedding, Clothes and the Rest Stay comfortable and, more importantly, warm.
Remember sleeping bags, pillows and blankets and don't forget air mattresses or padding so you don't wake up stiff and sore from sleeping directly on the ground.
Pack a few changes of clothes, towels and plastic bags in case anything gets wet, jackets in preparation for nasty weather and togs for swimming.
Cooking If you haven't enjoyed outdoor cooking during a camping trip, you're missing out on one of the best parts.
Pick up a cheap, portable barbecue, a gas bottle and enjoy safe, easy and delicious cooking around the campsite.
Pack water, utensils, matches, trash bags, cooking oils and (of course) ingredients!
