Function

• Anemometers are used by meteorologists to determine wind speeds during storms as well as during calmer weather. Sailors rely on anemometers to track changes in wind speed when they are at sea because increases in wind speed may indicate an impending storm. Wind farms use anemometers to gauge wind speed because the windmills or turbines require a minimum of 14 mph to generate electricity. Anemometers are also used at airports.
  
  

Significance

• Anemometers at weather stations and on offshore weather buoys track increasing wind speeds during hurricane season. The data collected from these anemometers help meteorologists determine the path of the hurricane and where it might make landfall.
