Door Hanging Methods

Doors take more abuse than any other wood item in a home because they are used every day. Eventually, the door gets bashed and beaten around enough to the point that it needs to be replaced with a new door that will need to be hung. There are a few good ways to hang a door.

    Replacing the Door Only

    • When replacing the door and not the frame, you will need a hammer and a screwdriver to remove the hinge pins from the door hinges. Take the door outside and lay it down on a set of sawhorses. Using a square, measure the locations of the edges of the hinges and transfer those measurements to the new door. Measure the location of the top of each hinge from the top of the old door. Transfer these measurements to the new door. Remove the hinges from the old door and place them onto the new door so that you can trace the outline of each hinge onto the door. Chisel out enough wood so that the door hinges sit flush (even with the side of the door). Mount the hinges, take the door inside and mount the new door by re-inserting the hinge pins.

    Pocket Door Replacement

    • Remove the pocket door from its track by removing the decorative trim to expose the door. Tilt the door outward to pop it out of the track. Take the track off of the old door and screw it onto the new door. Tilt the new door into the track and slide it back and forth to test it. Re-install the trim work, test one more time, and pack up your tools.

    Pre-Hung Door

    • Remove the trim around both sides of the door. Use a reciprocating saw to cut the nails/screws between the door frame and the door jamb. Remove the old door with the frame completely. Insert the new pre-hung door in the opening. Shim the sides of the door so there is an even spacing between the door jamb and the door framing. After making sure that the door is plumb (straight up and down) with a level, attach the hinged side to the framing with long screws through the hinges. Attach the other side using long screws through the plunger stop. Test the door for proper operation. Re-install the trim on both sides of the door using nails.
