How to Find a Good Health Insurance Carrier

    • 1). Consider the options for your area. When evaluating health insurance, one of the most important aspects is whether the doctor offices and hospitals in your area will accept the health insurance. A cheap health insurance plan may save you money when paying the premium, but it will not be worth the savings if you have to drive more than an hour to receive care.

    • 2). Ask for recommendations from friends and family. You will feel more confident in choosing a health insurance plan when you personally know someone that has been happy with the option. Be sure to ask those that you know how they feel about their health insurance plan. Listen to both the good and bad points to help you make a decision.

    • 3). Find the type of insurance plan that works for you. The two major choices are a Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) and a Preferred Provider Organization (PPO). In general, an HMO is less expensive while a PPO offers more choices and flexibility.

    • 4). Compare coverage options. Health insurance plans can vary widely. One of the biggest differences is the types of services that are covered under each plan. For example, one insurance provider may pay for services only at certain hospitals. You'll also have to consider the deductible, or the amount of money that you'll be responsible for before your insurance coverage begins.

    • 5). Check local ratings. In some cities, especially large ones where there are more insurance choices, a local newspaper or organization will rank the available choices. This can help you tell which carrier in your area is the best one.

    • 6). Look at the cost of insurance. With each type of insurance plan, you'll face a different monthly cost. This can be an important factor. If you want to lower your costs, look for plans that have higher deductibles.
