When purchasing a new car in the UK, you have more to consider than the type of make and model. You also need to consider what car insurance group that vehicle you have your eye on falls into. Every car built to the requirements of the United Kingdom is rated and grouped according to several factors such as safety, repair costs and value. These groups can go a long way to determining how much insurance you will pay for that new car. - Cars that fall in the low group ranking typically have a score below 10. These cars have several safety features such as an alarm system, etched and visible VIN numbers and an immobilization system in the event of theft. These cars also have inexpensive replacement parts and simple repairs. For example, the Volkswagon Polo ranges from three to 10 on the rating scale and the Seat Arosa ranges from two to three, according to Expert Car Directory. Cars with a low group rating will have the lowest insurance premiums.
- According to Expert Car Directory, most family style cars fall between six and 12 in the car groups and qualify as midrange. Repair costs for midrange cars are slightly higher than low car groups, but they include many of the same safety features. Midrange cars carry an average sale price, hold their value well and have a high resell value. The Ford Fiesta, Peugeot 306 and Citroen Saxo are examples of midrange cars.
- Some sedans and smaller compact cars fall slightly higher on the car group scale than midrange cars, but do not reach the highest level of groupings. Above average, or higher groups range from nine to 20, such as the Audi A3, which carries a nine to 18 rating, or the BMW 3, which carries an 11 to 20 rating, according to Expert Car Directory. Typically, cars in the above average group have larger performance engines or carry more extra packages such as trim and wheel packages than the midrange cars. They are also more expensive to repair.
- Sports cars and luxury vehicles fall in the range of the highest car groupings. These cars normally have high performance engines, several add on packages and a high sale price. While the majority of these cars have many safety features, the high cost of replacement parts and repairs cancels out any positive rating. Cars in this group fall between 18 and 20 on the car group scale. These cars will carry the highest insurance premiums of all car groups.
