Typical Japanese Clothing
- The kimono is the national costume of Japan. It is worn by women on special occasions and holidays. There are several different types of kimonos. Single women traditionally wear a style called furisode. The kurotomesode is reserved for married women and the susohiki is what you see the Geishas and performers wearing.
- A more casual option is the yukata. It is similar in style to the wrap style of the kimono, but it is made in lighter fabrics, such as cotton, which are easier to wear daily. Today you can see people in Japanese inns wearing the yukata because it is a comfortable option to wear after bathing.
- Getas are the close in style to the American style flip-flop. They have platform wooden bases and were not worn commonly by the Japanese people. They have always been mostly worn with the full traditional outfits, such as the kimono and yukata, or for ceremonial purposes. Their height serves to keep clothing away from the ground. The high platforms make them hard to walk in.
- A waragi is a kind of footwear that can be worn in different ways. Traditionally they are worn with the toes extending out over the front of the sandal, some opt out of this though. In the past they were the most commonly worn shoe in Japan, today they are most commonly worn by the Buddhist monks.
