Classroom Instruction Techniques

    Scaffolding

    • Scaffolding is an instructional technique that builds on prior knowledge. You may build on what a student already knows from a different context or probe further when a student shows some correctness in his response but needs guided practice to arrive at a full understanding of the task. Another way of understanding the technique is the example of solving a similar, simple problem and then transferring that knowledge to the original problem.

    Communication

    • Good classroom interaction requires that students and teachers communicate with one another. Communicating effectively with students sends a positive message to students and parents alike. Frequently contacting families, who are partners in their child's education, fosters good relationships among parents, children and teachers. Positive phone calls, teacher-generated newsletters, postcards and e-mails are all viable means of communicating that will pay off in better classroom relations.

    Discipline

    • To manage a classroom successfully, you need to be proactive by planning your day and having established routines so the students know what to do and what to expect each day. When students come into the classroom, they begin immediately on a start-up activity without you having to tell them what to do. While the students work on the start-up activity, you take care of chores, such as taking the roll or distributing papers. This method is more effective if you discuss the expectations at the beginning of the semester.

    Assessment

    • The purpose of classroom assessment is two-fold. It helps you know if the students understand the subject matter, and it measures the effectiveness of your methodology. Assessments differ from tests in that their purpose is to improve learning and teaching techniques rather than giving grades. Techniques such as probing prior knowledge are quick and easy to use and provide a steady flow of information so that you may adjust your teaching methods as necessary.
