How to Draw Tree Branches

    • 1). Locate an image of a tree to use as a guide. Start with a winter scene that shows exposed branches so you can get a sense of the overall shape.

    • 2). Begin your drawing. Sketch a large, rectangular trunk in the center of your paper. Place it in bottom portion of the page to leave room for your branches. At the top of the rectangle, create smaller trunks branching out. These will form the basis for your thinner branches. Make sure the outside of each of these smaller trunks fit seamlessly with your rectangular trunk.

    • 3). Continue added lines to form your branches. From the top of the rectangular trunk, extend your smaller trunks and add more branching off of them in different directions to achieve the overall shape of the tree. Your branches should gradually get thinner the farther away they get from the trunk. Every half inch or so, add an extra branch of your main branches. The branches should never extend symmetrically but naturally and sporadically.

    • 4). Extend your branch lines across the page until you have created a full crown of branches, where each branch slims to a small point and the overall shape of the tree takes shape.

    • 5). Add additional details to your tree. Draw creases along branches to create the look of texture. Fill in any blank spots with additional lines for branches.

    • 6). Add shading to areas of your branches to add depth to the drawing by giving the branches the look of three-dimensional objects.
