Microlight flying, or ultralight flying as it is known in the United States, became popular in the 1980s, as aviation enthusiasts sought inexpensive ways to take to the skies. The Federal Aviation Authority's definition of an ultralight significantly differed from that of most other countries, until in 2004 they introduced the classification of light-sport aircraft, which is similar to the definition of microlight and ultralight in other countries. The United States Ultralight Association website provides a list of schools throughout the nation. - California Sport Aviation Flight School divides sport pilot training into two parts: ground school covering the theory and practical flight instruction. As of 2010 ground school costs $349 and flight instruction is charged on an hourly rate of $125 an hour. Students who book blocks of lessons can get discounted rates. Most students can expect to take at least 30 hours of flight instruction, before gaining the competence to fly solo.
