Do You Have an Expensive Insurance Deductible? Save Money on Prescriptions Anyway

Thanks to the ACA many people are discovering they now have very high deductibles and their drug coverage is rolled into it, which means a lot more out of pocket costs when you buy medications until your have met that deductible.
This has become a scary reality for a great many people.
I found a great solution.
There is a website called goodrx.
com.
It allows you to search your area pharmacies for the best price on the medications you take.
Using this site shows that in the same city the same prescription can have a cost difference of hundreds of dollars.
A patient not knowing this could inadvertently pay way more for their medication simply because they didn't realize the store a mile away was that much cheaper.
This fact is true for pretty much any medication.
I ran every drug we have used in the last 3 years through this app to see if I could save money.
I discovered something remarkable.
My insurance plan hadn't been helping me save as much money as I thought.
Using the free coupons from goodrx I was able to get medications for less than my insurance co-pay and in other cases for not more than $10 above my co-pay.
I figured if my premium was high at least it was saving me money on prescription drugs.
Wrong.
I was overpaying for no reason.
If you signup for a free account at goodrx you can also check prices against your Medicare costs, which is especially helpful for those in the donut hole.
Using a goodrx coupon on a drug means you're not running it through your insurance at all, so it's not counting toward your deductible.
You will want to consider that and whether it matters for your budget.
Some people have no insurance so websites like this are very helpful and save them hundreds of dollars in real money when they need a prescription.
Doctors love it because if the meds are cheaper that means their patients will actually take them.
You can use this app in your doctors office to determine if what you are being prescribed is too expensive and is there a cheaper alternative he would agree to.
Overall, this is a very useful website and app that I highly recommend if you are looking to save money on prescription drugs whether you have health insurance or not.
