How to Change Direct-Payment From the Social Security Administration

Online (Same Bank, Account to Account)

    • 1). Visit the Social Security Administration's "Password Services" main Web page. Click the "Get a Temporary Password Request Code" button. On the following page, click "Continue." On the third page, check the box that indicates you've read the Privacy Agreement Statement associated with the request and click "I Agree."

    • 2). Enter your personal information such as your Social Security number in the request template and submit your request. Once you submit the request, SSA will assign you a temporary password and send it to you via postal mail. This can take up to 15 days.

    • 3). Go to the "Password Services" Web page again. Click the "Create Your Permanent Password" button. Use your temporary password and other personal information to reset the password SSA assigned to you to the password you prefer.

    • 4). Go to the SSA "Online Services" login page. Enter your Social Security number and password. Modify your direct-payment information once you are logged in.

Phone (Same Bank, Account to Account)

    • 1). Call SSA at 1-800-772-1213; if you are hard of hearing call TTY 1-800-325-0778.

    • 2). Tell the representative you'd like to modify your direct deposit information.

    • 3). Provide the SSA representative with the information necessary to change your direct-deposit data. The representative will ask for your Social Security number, the name of the bank and the account and routing numbers involved at a minimum. The representative will modify your information for you in the SSA systems.

In Person (New Account at Different Bank)

    • 1). Download and print form SF-1199A, "Direct Deposit Sign-Up Form," from the SSA website. Fill out as much of the form as you can.

    • 2). Bring Form SF-1199A to your new bank, along with a voided personal check from the account you want to use.

    • 3). Tell the bank representative you need to change your direct-deposit information and submit your voided check and SF-1199A. The representative will help you complete the rest of the form and, if desired, submit it to SSA on your behalf.

    • 4). Take your voided check and completed SF-1199A to your local branch of SSA if you prefer to submit them on your own instead of letting your bank do it. The representative will modify your information in the SSA systems.
