Vaginal Infection: Don"t Make It Worse

Vaginal infection is a common condition occurring in women from puberty, adulthood, pregnancy to menopausal stage. This refers to an increase in the normal number of organisms present in the vagina: bacteria, protozoan, or yeasts. It is one reason why women see their physicians often because this infection can happen now and then to most women. Stress, hormonal changes or illness can trigger such condition. The infection can be in three common forms: Candida vulvovaginitis or yeast infections, trichomoniasis or parasitic infections and vaginosis or bacterial infections.

The Candida vaginitis is known as yeast infection which results to increase amount of white, thick, cottage cheese-like vaginal discharges. It can have irritation, swelling or redness around the area. The Bacterial vaginosis is caused by the numerous Gardnerella in the vagina. This may lead to malodorous thin white/discolored discharges and strong smell at sexual intercourse. The Trichomonas vaginitis or trick can bring itching or irritation and fish-like odor of the genitals. This is the third most frequent type.

The causes of the infection may be due to stress, menopausal stage, sexual intercourse, pregnancy, vaginal medications, transmitted diseases, antibiotics, hormones, contraceptives or birth control, douches or change in sexual partners.

Symptoms of vaginal infection include pain or bleeding during intercourse, burning with urination, increase or change in discharge (gray, green or yellow colors), redness, itching, swelling and vaginal odor. The discharge is the first sign of any presence of infection where the frequency, color, and odor may vary depending on the infection the woman have. A normal discharge does not have swelling, itching or redness of the vagina.

There are ways to prevent the occurrences of the infection of the vagina. Most important of all, prevention starts with one self like keeping a healthy and proper hygiene. Excessive moisture in the genital area should be avoided by drying up after bath, wearing clean fresh under wears and loose pants or shorts. Avoid douching because it can strip off protective lining in the vagina. Take yogurt with lactobacilli to prevent yeast infection. Be responsible during sexual intercourse by using condoms. Do not use tampons, feminine fragrances, sprays or powders. Maintain a normal blood sugar level in the body.

Treatments for the infections vary on the type of the infection. Some people may find over-the-counter products or home remedies enough to cure their condition. But usually the cure is relative to the tolerance and state of the person infected. So it is best to consult a doctor not only on the first occurrence but also during the times when the infection keep coming back.
