Always Ready

In this 1858 lithograph titled "The American Fireman: Always Ready," Currier and Ives depicted a fireman responding to a call. He is wearing a red shirt with a double row of buttons, a coat, and tall leather boots, a typical fireman's uniform of the period. And, of course, he's wearing a helmet similar to what firefighters wear today.
