In Ohio as in most of the world, restaurants and food service are big business. A college degree in culinary arts can provide the knowledge and skills to greatly expand your career opportunities. There are universities and colleges throughout Ohio that offer culinary arts training in all aspects of the food industry. - The University of Cincinnati offers a bachelor of applied science program in culinary arts and science. It is only one of eight culinary programs in the United States that is approved by the Research Chefs' Association, and the only one in Ohio. The program is run in cooperation with Cincinnati State Technical and Community College, where all students spend the first two years of the program and earn an associate's degree in culinary arts. Even though students take classes at Cincinnati State, they are still eligible to live on the UC campus and participate in all university activities. Students then spend an additional three years studying at the University of Cincinnati. The first two years at Cincinnati State focus on food preparation, service and management. Once at UC, students focus more on the science of food, food processing technologies, product development, and manufacturing. In addition to traditional academic classes, all full-time students are also required to take part in a year-round co-op program that includes paid, on-the-job training in 13-week work sections. Graduates of the five-year program are able to move on to careers in food preparation, service, management, research and development, manufacturing, marketing and sales.
