Use an herbal shampoo when cleaning your dog's fur. Herbal shampoos are chemical free, contain natural oils that act as repellents toward insects and are pH balanced to prevent drying and skin irritation.

    • 2). Brush your dog, especially long-haired breeds. Brushing your dog's coat can improve the texture of your dog's fur. Dog Time recommends using a soft-bristled brush.

Ensure that your dog is getting proper nutrition. Dogs spend up to 30 percent of their protein requirement developing their coat, as stated by Eukanuba. Your dog's food should contain some form of protein that can include beef, poultry, fish or lamb.

    • 4). Put a teaspoonful of vegetable oil in your dog's food. Adding the oil twice daily will add luster to your dog's coat.

    • 5). Ask your veterinarian if your dog will benefit from a fatty acid supplement such as omega-3. Fatty acids can help your dog develop a shiny coat though it can take months before you detect a difference.
