- 1). Fill the chainsaw with gas, leaving a half inch for air at the top of the tank. Press the primer bulb on the saw three times and pull the starting cord.
- 2). Make a cut on the underside of the tree limb about a foot out from the trunk. Cut a third of the way through the limb.
- 3). Make another cut 2 inches out from the first cut, but this time on the top of the branch. Cut all the way through the limb to remove it from the tree.
- 4). Move your saw to the collar of the limb, where the limb meets the trunk of the tree. Cut the rest of the branch off the tree at the collar. Removing the branch this way prevents ripping. Use this technique to cut any branch more than an 1 1/2 inches in diameter.
