5 Reasons Why Sci-Fi and Bollywood Are Poles Apart
Mr. India directed by Shekar Kapur is the only sensible Sci-fi Bollywood has ever made. We enjoy spicy and juicy scandalous tales a lot, don't we? When we step into the theatre, it's only to have a good 90 to 120 minutes of farcical nonstop nonsense. Most of the Hollywood Sci fi has done well in India so it is not to say that the audience is not receptive.
Movies like Love Story 2020, Koi Mil Gaya, and Krishh series make a mockery of this genre. Sci fi in Bollywood is so mediocre that you think they'd rather play it safe or use that excess money for a charitable purpose instead of making a Sci-fi.
Paani is another our upcoming project that deals with paani ka problem in 2040. Our moviemakers are still expecting us to face the third world problems even in 2040. Sad! This shows the regressive thinking that prevails in Bollywood. Sci fi needs avant-garde themes and conflict. It is discouraging to see even big banners like that of Aditya Chopra brainstorming with slow-witted themes that do not go in sync with the sci fi genre.
You can conclude that Bollywood does not get this, fantasy, or horror in spite of having access to the latest tools, techniques, and expertise in animation and graphics. They are so preoccupied with adding a 'love story' to every movie. It is like every movie is a love story regardless of the genre. Not denying there are a few rare exceptions and those exceptions have a Mafia theme.
The only time they make good use of technology is when they proudly flaunt the symptoms of Cut-copy-paste. Our superheros mock the very essence of a super human. Captin Vyom, Ra.One, G.One, Shaktiman, Toofan, is our superheros so far whose names too are so absurd it's not even funny. We somehow have to relate every superhero to some character in Mythology and suck at it!
Writers of these so-called Bollywood Sci fi films do not know if they have to stick to the modern science or use some long forgotten esoteric values in characterization that no one will relate to.
They expect our Sci-Fi heroes to sing and dance in their funny costumes. They have to use bad spelling and repeated letters in the title of a Sci-Fi movie. Impractical costumes having latex and spandex in a tropical country such as India. We have to simulate the idea of costumes too. There is no reference to any scientific material in a Bollywood Sci-fi whatsoever.
They do not treat these films independently without adding the time tested 'Bollywood Formula' that they can happily do away with. Bollywood movies seem like an all in a days work. As long as Bollywood remains in its comfort zone of making rom coms and drama, this genre will not evolve in Bollywood.
