Driving Test Tips & Tricks

    Before Leaving Home

    • Check all signals, lights and horn before leaving to take the test. Bring along required paperwork, such as a learner's permit and proof of insurance The bureau of motor vehicles often reschedules the test if the proper items are not presented. Take the test in the vehicle that makes you most comfortable. A licensed driver must accompany you to the testing site.

    Cell Phones

    • Young drivers often carry cell phones. Turn off the phone, keep it out of sight or leave it at home. Receiving a phone call during your test is distracting, and frequently irritates the examiner. Your attention must be on driving and watching road signs.

    You and The Examiner

    • Listen carefully to the examiner; follow all his instructions. Pay attention to signs. Some examiners may ask you to turn onto a one-way street, just to see if you are paying attention to your surroundings. The examiner watches for complete stops, correctly signaling and merging when changing lanes and adherence to the speed limit.

    Special Maneuvers

    • Practice parallel parking; you must parallel park without bumping the curb or hitting cars in front of or behind you. Examiners usually give a failing grade if the student cannot parallel park correctly. Three- and four-way stops often trouble young drivers. Study the rules on such intersections to ensure you understand which driver has the right of way .
