Melamine Poisoning Symptoms

    Symptoms

    • Symptoms of melamine poisoning are blood in the urine, irritability, signs of kidney infection, little or no urine and high blood pressure.

    Melamine Research

    • According to the World Health Organization (WHO), research on laboratory test animals has shown that animals fed melamine diets show carcinogenic tendencies. Carcinogenic tendencies are destructive reactions resulting in symptoms and conditions that might lead to cancer.

    Poisoning Complications and Treatment

    • According to WHO, the most common melamine poisoning complications are kidney stones in both infants who ingested the tainted infant formula with melamine, and animals of melamine test studies. Treatment may include urine alkalinisation (a therapy used to treat acute poisoning), infusion of fluids, correction of acid-base disturbance and electrolyte, peritoneal dialysis haemodialysis or surgical removal.

    Harmful to the Environment

    • According to Melamine DMS, when emitted into the water via soil, water or air, the impact of melamine is minimal.

    Food and Drug Melamine Testing

    • The Food and Drug Administration Field laboratories are testing products which may contain melamine such as powdered infant formula and diary-containing food products or ingredients.
