Parrot Recall Training
- 1). Hold the parrot's food in your hand and let it eat out of it. Permit the parrot to sit wherever it likes on you or on a couch and do not pet it. This instills in the parrot pure trust of a human being; it will know it is safe while touching a person. Continue this for two weeks.
- 2). Touch the parrot gently as it eats out of your hand in the third week. Stroke its legs, head or back but stop stroking if it acts agitated or pulls away. Let the parrot sit on you and climb around on you.
- 3). Use a training clicker to reinforce good behavior. Allow the parrot to sit on your hand and then pet it. Click the training aid and give the parrot a treat so that it associates touching and petting with receiving a treat.
- 4). Place the parrot on a perch stand somewhere not close to its cage. A separate room with no distractions and a closed door is a good training area. Put your hand next to the parrot's breast and say "up" to get it to climb onto your hand. Click the training aid and give the parrot a treat while telling it "good boy." Continue this training method for 15 minutes a day for about four days.
- 5). While still in the separate room, practice letting the parrot fly to you from its perch and land on your hand. Always call the parrot to you to make it understand to come when you call. Move to other rooms in the house that are not as quiet so that the parrot will come to you whenever it is called.
