Common Name: Snares Penguin
Scientific Name: Eudyptes robustus
Range: Endemic to Snares Island, New Zealand.
Another of the crested penguins, the snares penguin has the most restricted range and is difficult to see in the wild because of government prohibitions against landing on Snares Island, but limited cruises and research expeditions do provide viewing opportunities. These birds are more mild mannered than other crested penguins, but are considered vulnerable to storms that can devastate the limited breeding colonies, and ocean current temperature changes can decimate their food supply.
