    Tron

    • In 1982 Tron pioneered the use of computer-generated graphics in feature film with the inclusion of 15 to 20 minutes of CG animated vehicles.

    Star Trek II – The Wrath of Khan

    • ILM developed the computer graphics sequence shown in this 1982 film to show the “Genesis effect”.

    Young Sherlock Holmes

    • The first completely computer generated character, a stained glass knight, was created by John Lasseter (creator of Pixar Animation Studios). His work was nominated for the Visual Effects Academy Award in 1985.

    Luxo Jr.

    • In 1986, this animated short from Pixar became the first CGI film to be nominated for the Oscar.

    Tin Toy

    • The 1988 Academy Award went to Pixar’s animated short “Tin Toy”, the first CG short to receive an Oscar.

    Feature Film

    • In 1995 John Lasseter received a technical Academy Award for development and application of techniques for his work on “Toy Story”. In 2001, the first Oscar for Best Animated Feature went to Dreamworks SKG’s “Shrek”, defeating Pixar’s “Monster’s Inc.”
