How to Search for Hotels by City

    • 1). Log onto the Internet and direct your browser to a site like Hotels.com. Enter the name of the city where you need a hotel room. Enter the number of adults and children in your travel party as well as your dates of travel and wait for a menu of available hotels to appear. Sites such as Hotels.com provide information on hotel chains and independent lodging options that choose to participate in their searches. In exchange for the exposure, the hotels pay the travel websites a commission for each booking. Customers benefit from reduced rates, especially for last-minute bookings.

    • 2). Use the Internet to see if the city you're traveling to has a travel or tourism bureau. For example, Nashville has a Tourism Board and City Hospitality Division. Contact the applicable bureaus and ask for a list of recommended hotels in the city. This can be a great way to find a hotel that meets your specific needs because you'll be dealing with locals who know the lay of the land, i.e., hotels to close to where you're doing business or attending an event, hotels offering specials, etc.

    • 3). Join travel clubs such as Good Sam or AAA. Take advantage of the club's membership benefits, which often include hotel booking and recommendation services. As an added bonus, the hotels you'll find through travel clubs have passed their quality control tests, letting you know they've achieved a certain standard of excellence.

    • 4). Point your Internet browser to your hotel chain website of choice. If you prefer to use a specific chain, such as Marriott, Hilton or Holiday Inn, use its proprietary website to find hotel options for your city. Most hotel websites provide search fields for dates, number in party and amenities wanted as well.
