UNITY, EMBRACING THE ART OF TOGETHERNESS
A wise man said that one arrow is easily broken but not ten in a bundle and another mused that united we stand and divided we fall. I am really apalled by the rate of disunity and racial disharmony in the world today as we have people of the same nation at war with each other. I watched as the nation of Sudan split in two because of the war that has been going on for years. Now instead of one Sudan, we have Northern Sudan and Southern Sudan. I can just imagine what is happening all over the world when nations are going head to head with one another. The most memorable match I ever watched was the one between the United States of America and Iran at France 98. Though the two countries were slugging it out in politics on the football pitch they were friends as the captain of the Iranian team presented gifts to his counterpart from America. The coach of Iran humbly got off his bench and when to say hello to his opposing coach shaking hands with him. Alexi Lalas, said if it meant USA losing the match to restore relations with Iran so be it. A wise man said many hands make light work and in Africa we say that if the cobwebs will unite then they will tie down the lion. The Tower Of Babel would have been man's greatest achievement of building a tower that would reach the top of heaven except for some things and one of them is the disunity factor. As long as they had one language, mission impossible was on its way to being mission accomplished. Then there was a change in events with the builders speaking different languages which halted the building forever. Today it is now a byword and a proverb as it cannot be described as a 'has been' it is now a 'never was'. A success story that might have been but it never was. We lose a lot when we decide to be cruel, harsh or nasty to someone of another nationality. Someone reasoned that' He who is kind to a stranger is a citizen of the world'. If chopping down another man's furniture does not make yours look better then bringing down another nation won't make your nation stand taller. You maybe successful in throwing mud and hitting your target but your hands will be soiled with mud. I watched with tears in my eyes a documentary of the South African rugby team known as the Springboks who were playing the finals in front of a home crowd especially the elder statesman Nelson Mandela who was president of the Rainbow Nation as they were popularly called. One black South African walked out of the sitting room where he had been watching the game not moved because he had locked up in him all the hate of the apartheid years and to make things worse, the whole Springbok team where all white. He walked back into the sitting room where he saw a sight that he would live with for the rest of his life. The Springboks had won the Rugby World Cup with the whole nation rejoicing and celebrating not minding whether the team was black or white. The Rainbow Nation for the first time celebrated as a nation united and to cap it all up, South Africa hosted the first World Cup on African soil which was tagged memorable. It is said that two good heads are better than one. The Concorde, the world's fastest plane was built by the British and the French and wait for it, they don't speak the same language. World harmony is an achievable goal if we all put our eggs into one basket and watch it. I look forward to a time when racism, segregation and discrimination will be a thing of the past. And it starts with me and you loving and respecting others as extension of ourselves and not distant strangers. I leave you with this T.E.A.M meaning Together Everyone Achieves More. See you on top.
